Stories from the Arlington Rotary Club
Each year the Rotary Club of Arlington offers a book to every Webb Student.
Over two days each class is led into the school library and students choose their book. We then have them sign their name on a book plate, so everyone knows that this book is theirs to keep! I enjoyed my three hours there yesterday visiting with awesome, polite kids and dedicated teachers and staff at Webb Elementary.
This historic photo showing our first time meeting again in person after the pandemic of 2020 wearing our masks and keeping apart!
OUR FIRST IN-PERSON MEETING OF THE YEAR was held at the church last Thursday; it actually felt like the first meeting ever! It was obvious that our Rotarians have missed other Rotarians. Even though everyone was wearing a mask, there were warm greetings and social interaction everywhere. As Pastor Chris said, changes will be coming step by step. This week, those that are vaccinated will not be required to wear a mask at our meeting. Hopefully, we will get to sit a little closer together too. As to serving lunch, we will have to wait a little longer. Right now it would be hard to predict how many will attend the in-person meeting, and hard to tell a caterer how many to prepare for.
THE LISANN PETERS’ READ WITH ROTARY IS ON MAY 18–19, 2021 at Webb Elementary during the school’s Scholastic Book Fair.
Karen Patterson, the Librarian has the book fair set up in her library where each student in the school comes through the fair and picks out a book to take home as their very own. Our Rotary Club volunteers attend the book fair from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm each day and have short conversations with each student about reading and why they picked out that particular book.
Webb Scholarship recipient Veronica Rodrigues was recently inducted as a member the Arlington RC. As the April 30th speaker, Veronica shared her journey since receiving the scholarship
Peter Scott introduced speaker, Veronica Rodriguez and noted that after all these years she is the first Webb Elementary graduate to ever join Rotary! Her list of accomplishments is amazing!
In 1994, the Rotary Club of Arlington established the
Webb Elementary Scholarship and this month one of the
recipients, Veronica Rodriguez has become a club member.
Veronica was a sixth grader at Webb Elementary in 1999 and graduated from Bowie High School in 2005. With the assistance of the $750 scholarship, she went on to attend college at Brookhaven Community College in Dallas and two years later she attended the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in International Political Economy.
Mayor Jeff Williams tells his club
about all the great things
happening in Arlington.
Kurt Bartley introduced our speaker for the day, Mayor Jeff Williams. Williams complimented our club on our services and spoke about the recent energy outages and ERCOT. He showed us the storm recovery website: arlingtontx.gov/ stormrecovery.org. Here, one can learn about where to go to receive help with food, shelter, storage, insurance questions, and help with pipe damage. Williams mentioned that we didn’t open stadiums for warming centers because there was no guarantee that those places wouldn’t have a power outage. He was thankful to all those city workers who helped deliver water to hospitals and other rescue services, plus the workers at vaccination centers. City workers also helped apartment complexes with out-of-state owners deal with water/pipe problems. He was also thankful to our community for keeping us all informed about the state of our water, and the number for help is 817-459-6777.
On June 11, 2023, the Rotary Club of Arlington
will be officially celebrating its 100th Anniversary.
Centennial Committee members are hard at work
preparing for a great celebration.
Centennial Committee members Susie (Club President), Val (committee chair), Victoria (our president nominee), Hal Thurow (historian) and Kurt (our president elect) met recently to review some great club historical facts. The photo below shows our original Rotary International Charter. Also, shown in the photo above are Victoria and Hal are holding two bound volumes of our weekly newsletters that date back to 1947. We will be celebrating a rich history of community service in 2023.
Serving the needs of clients at Arlington Charities,
members of the Rotary Club of Arlington
spent their entire Friday morning volunteering
to help fight hunger in the Arlington area.
Staring this Friday, volunteers from club pack food bags and load food into cars from 8:00-11:30. The 4th Friday of each month will be a Arlington Charities Community Service activity for at least the next few months according to Club President Susie McAlister.
Our guest speakers are, Paul R. Alexander
and Norman Brown. Paul may be the
last living person to in an iron lung.
The noon meeting will be highlighted by a challenge to raise funds to End Polio Now. If you are not a member, but would like to participate in this wonderful virtual meeting, contact Peter Smith or Randy Hendricks for access credentials.

Rotary is open for business.  Below is a directory of the businesses represented by members of our club.  One sorted by name and one sorted by career field (classification).  The latter can be used if you are looking for a reliable and trusted source for a specific need (lawyer, handyman, financial advisor, etc.)  We would love for you to use these resources to get to know us better.
