Youth Services: Webb Elementary

The Rotary Club of Arlington has long been involved in promoting the students at Webb Elementary.  From painting the hallways to providing scholarships for the students, our Club works tirelessly to ensure these kids have a normal school experience and have the opportunity to pursue further education.  Here are a few of the projects we did with the students this year!

We had our weekly meeting on 02/22/2018 in the library at Webb for some of the students to read their letters they wrote about their experiences at Camp Grady Spruce.  This is always a favorite program of our membership and it is always entertaining to see what the kids remember and what made the biggest impression on them during this adventure.

We bought Thesauruses for the entire 4th grade – 98 students in all.  We distributed them on 11/27/2017.  What a fun day for these kids!

We donate one book every week to the library and have our speakers at our meetings sign the books.  This is a wonderful way for the students to connect with the Club and see different career paths as they discover the various books available in their library!

Read with Rotary: every child in the school gets to pick out a book from the Scholastic Book Fair in March.  Our Rotarians manned 2 tables for the students to bring their book by and we put Rotary stickers in the inside cover where the student can write their name in their book.  Most of the students have never owned a book before, and we are so honored to give these gifts that they can use on into the future.

The Youth Services committee of our club set a goal: Engage our members with our local community and businesses with youth in our community and to provide the youth with educational opportunities.
  • Our team engaged with the local Chamber of Commerce as a Partner in Education, participating in the Chambers recruiting and providing mentors to the Arlington Independent School Districts 8th graders as part of their curriculum in learning about available careers and what education/experience would be needed to achieve success; Entrepreneurship Day award presentations to 3rd – 8th graders for their BIG Ideas submissions; Interviewing and awarding one scholarship to each high school in the school district.
  • Presentation of Rotarian Service Awards to two 8th graders in each of the 56 elementary schools and  two to each of the 10 Junior High Schools in the Arlington Independent School District.
  • Arlington Scholarships for Webb Elementary students that graduate from high school and continue on to college have been awarded to 75 students this past year.  Meetings at the were held at the high schools to award these scholarships.
As a result of these programs,  we helped to create awareness and develop relationships within the community and great educational opportunities to the youth.
