Honoring Paul Harris: The Spirit of a True Rotarian
April 19 marks the birthday of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary and a man whose vision continues to shape our lives and communities today. Born in 1868, Harris believed in bringing together professionals from diverse backgrounds to build meaningful relationships and serve others. What began as a simple idea in Chicago has grown into a global movement dedicated to service above self.
As Rotarians, we are the living expression of his vision. Our actions, both big and small, reflect the enduring values he championed—integrity, fellowship, and service. One way we honor his legacy is by embracing what many call the “Pledge of a True Rotarian.”
To be a true Rotarian is to carry ourselves in a way that brings credit to our club and to Rotary as a whole. It means placing service above self, not just during meetings or projects, but in our daily interactions at work, at home, and in our community. It calls us to actively promote understanding, goodwill, and peace—principles that feel more important now than ever.
As we reflect on Paul Harris’s life, we notice that Rotary is not just something we belong to: It is also something we live. Each act of kindness, each moment of integrity, and each opportunity to serve carries his vision forward. That is the true pledge of a true Rotarian.
