Randy's Soliloquy
Why Do We Care as Rotarians?
[Immediate Past President Randy Hendricks has agreed to write this column while President Stacy Bridger is away. Thanks, Randy! - JPK]
Why am I a Rotarian? Why do I give my time, talent, and resources to serve others? And why does Rotary continue to matter to me?
My answer is simple: I care.
I care about people I may never meet, children whose futures depend on a good education, families struggling to put food on the table, and neighbors who need a helping hand. I care about the challenges facing our community, and I believe that doing something is better than doing nothing.
But I have learned that caring is more than a feeling. In Rotary, caring becomes action.
I see it in the Rotarian who gives up a Saturday morning to serve meals, the member who helps a student discover confidence and opportunity, and the club that partners with community organizations to address food insecurity, support literacy, improve health, and serve underserved citizens. These actions may seem small individually, but together they can change lives.
One of the things I value most about Rotary is that I do not have to make a difference alone. I am part of a group of people from different backgrounds, professions, and experiences who share a common desire to make the world a better place. Our friendships bring us together, but our commitment to service gives those friendships a deeper meaning.
As a member of the Rotary Club of Arlington, I have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to make a difference in our community. I believe our impact should be measured not simply by the meetings we hold or the activities we enjoy, but by the lives we touch and the needs we meet.
I know every Rotarian has something valuable to contribute. I can share an idea, volunteer for a project, mentor a young person, invite a prospective member, or encourage a fellow Rotarian. Every contribution matters.
I care because every person deserves an opportunity to live a better life. I am a Rotarian because, together, we can turn that belief into action.
Let us continue to create lasting action and demonstrate through our service that Rotary makes a difference. That is why I care. That is why I am proud to be a Rotarian.
